Nobuyuki ‘Nobu’ Matsuhisa, the Japanese chef who for over three decades has shared the versatility of Peruvian products at his restaurants Nobu and Matsuhisa, was named a “Friend of Peru.”
The Peru Country Brand gives this distinction to forge closer ties of friendship with world citizens who promote Peru’s exceptional qualities.
Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Eduardo Ferreyros, conferred the honor on the Japanese chef. Nicknamed ‘Nobu’, the chef plays a key role in introducing Peru’s ingredients and cuisine to diners around the world, making it more coveted and admired internationally.
During his trip to New York, Minister Ferreyros gave the honor to a representative of the renowned Japanese chef.
‘Nobu’ reaffirmed his commitment to continue promoting the virtues of Peruvian products. The ingredients most heavily featured in his cooking are lemon and hot peppers.
His concoctions use other Peruvian products like quinoa, sweet potato, dehydrated potato, paiche (bonytongue fish from the Amazon), charqui (jerked meat) or chinguirito (guitarfish ceviche), among others.
‘Nobu’ establishments can be found in all four corners of the globe. These eateries give patrons a chance to savor the flavors of Peru in a melding of traditional Japanese dishes and Peruvian ingredients.
The famous Japanese chef now owns more than 40 restaurants in the United States, United Kingdom, Greece, Germany, China, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Italy, Russia, Japan, Spain, Hungary, Monaco, South Africa and United Arab Emirates.
ABOUT “FRIEND OF PERU”
This honor was created by PROMPERÚ through the Peru Country Brand and is given only to prominent foreigners that have close ties to our country, a fondness that shows commitment, trust, respect and admiration for Peru.
“Friends of Peru” promote our resources, landscapes, culture or people through their talents, products or work. Peru holds a special place in their hearts though it isn’t their homeland, and they share this soft spot with the world.
In November of last year, chef Jordi Roca, the World’s Best Pastry Chef of the acclaimed El Celler de Can Roca restaurant, received this honor for using, promoting and introducing the world to Peruvian cacao.
In April of this year, Spanish designer Adolfo Domínguez was given the distinction for using, extolling and bringing global recognition to Peruvian alpaca fiber through his apparel.
These international celebrities bring prominence to aspects of Peru through their different activities and in the process magnify our country’s image, showcasing our star exports or tourist destinations on an international level, in order to develop the extensive supply chains of both sectors for the benefit of all Peruvians.
