The initial projections for the Peruvian participation at Biofach 2019, a fair which specialized in organic products, were exceeded by 80.8 %. According to the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ), participating Peruvian companies achieved business commitments of US$ 63.3 million.
Biofach 2019, considered one of the most important events in the agro-industrial sector worldwide, was held from February 13 to 16 in the German city of Nuremberg. Thirty-six Peruvian companies took part and held 1191 business meetings, mainly with buyers from Germany, France, Holland and Belgium.
The Peruvian delegation was made up of more than 120 participants, including visitors, producers and entrepreneurs, with the delegations of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), represented by Sierra y Selva Exportadora, standing out.
Of the total business, US$ 9.3 million was made during Biofach 2019, while the remaining US$ 54 million will materialize in the coming twelve months. These amounts are higher than those projected before the fair, and demonstrate the high demand for Peruvian products at this type of event.
The range was presented as part of the sector-specific brand Super Foods Perú, including quinoa with added value, cocoa in the form of chocolates, and ginger and chestnuts which were the products most in demand. Meanwhile, specialty coffee, yacon syrup and fresh and frozen fruits were the most eye-catching products for buyers.
During the fair there was ongoing tasting of specialty coffees from the north, center and south of the country with the new sector-specific brand Cafés del Perú. Buyers also had the opportunity to try smoothies made from maca, sacha inchi oil, camu camu, kiwicha and quinoa, among others.
It is important to mention that the Peruvian companies participated for the first time in the fair’s innovation shows (Novelty Stand), with innovative presentations and formulations, as well as allergen-free products.
The participation of the Peruvian delegation in Biofach 2019 was led by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), PROMPERÚ, Peru’s Foreign Trade Offices (OCEX), the Peruvian Embassy in Germany and Minagri.
