Peru began construction of its pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai. The work began with a moving ceremony presided over by a shaman who, in giving thanks to Mother Earth, asked permission from the Pachamama.
To the sound of Andean instruments and songs, Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Edgar Vasquez, PROMPERU's Executive President, Luis Torres, and Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director of the Expo 2020 Dubai Bureau, participated in the ceremony marking the beginning of what will be Peru's presence in this major global meeting.
"Our pavilion will allow us to show the world the best that Peru has to offer. Unique tourist destinations, exports, gastronomy and cultural expressions from all corners of the country will generate business for the benefit of all Peruvians", said Minister Vasquez during the ceremony.
Expo 2020 Dubai will open its doors in October next year for six months and is, according to organizers, expected to be visited by about 15 million people from around the world.
The Peruvian pavilion
As part of the 'Timeless, Always Peru' theme, a reproduction of the Q'eswachaka bridge will allow access to the Peruvian pavilion, which evokes the path the country has traveled throughout its history, nourished by numerous influences and events that have given rise to today's identity, which fills its inhabitants with pride.
Peruvian textiles will also have a strong presence with Paracas, Amazonian and Cusco looms, and even through the traditional woven totora reed boats on our coast. The renowned Peruvian gastronomy will also have a special space, with a restaurant where it will be possible to show the world the great biodiversity and tradition in Peruvian culinary heritage.
There will in addition be meeting rooms for Peruvian businessmen to meet with their peers from the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the world, in order to open new markets for exports or to boost international tourism to Peru.
In order to develop the concept of the Peruvian pavilion, a public competition was held among Peruvian architects. The winner was Habitare Arquitectura e Ingeniería with the collaboration of Studio 17.
Universal Promotion
Expo Dubai will be a unique showcase to display the biodiversity of Peruvian supplies linked to areas like agribusiness, fishing, biotrade, wood products, decorative items and handicrafts. As well as promoting alpaca fiber and cotton textiles, chocolate, specialty coffees, the Super Foods Peru brand and many other products.
As is well known, Peru's participation in high impact international events has made tourism the third-ranking economic activity in Peru, contributing 3.9% to GDP.
