Peru is this year's "Portrait Land" at the World of Coffee, the world's largest fair for coffee experts and coffee lovers. The event, organized by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), will now take place for the first time in Germany. From June 6-8, it will attract more than 300 exhibitors, two roasting villages and the World Coffee Competitions to the exhibition grounds in Berlin.
Peru is represented for the third time at the international trade fair and this time organizes professional coffee tastings with Germany's first Q-grader and coffee expert Katharina Gerasch as a special highlight. The American Q-Grader program is the world's most renowned coffee sensor certification, which Katharina Gerasch successfully completed in 2009 as the first German "Q-Arabica Graderin".
"We are very pleased to be in the focus at this year's World of Coffee as a "portrait country" reports Gycs Gordon, Director of the Peru Economic and Trade Office. "This is a wonderful opportunity for us to present our top Peruvian coffee internationally, to welcome interested visitors from all over the world to our stand and to promote our new marketing campaign "Coffees from Peru".
Differences in altitude and different microclimates favour a wide variety of different flavours. The total score of 91 points according to the Cupping Score of the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) proves that Peru is able to produce high-quality coffee and to position itself internationally as a coffee-growing country. Since 2016, Peru has therefore regularly participated successfully in the world-renowned "Cup of Excellence" competition for speciality coffee. In the coffee world, this is the highest award a coffee can receive.
Peru has ten coffee regions, a total of 87 percent of Peruvian coffee is grown in the regions of San Martín, Cajamarca, Junín, Amazonas and Cusco. Peruvian coffee consists exclusively of the Arabica type, 70 percent of which is Typica and 20 percent Caturra, while the remaining 10 percent is distributed among other varieties.
According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), Peru is the ninth largest coffee-producing country in the world with 223,902 coffee farmers. According to the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, it is the third largest producer of organic coffee and ranks fourth in production with sustainable coffee certification. 140,000 hectares of the land used for coffee cultivation in Peru are certified organic and ensure access to international markets. This certification guarantees that the coffee farmer does not use any chemicals or fertilizers.
In order to establish Peruvian coffee in its main markets and open up new markets, the Peruvian government recently launched the "Coffees from Peru" campaign - an alliance of the Peruvian government, local coffee farmers, producers and exporters. The trademark "Coffees from Peru" is not only intended to stand for a variety of flavours and high quality, but also for sustainability and equality between men and women in the coffee industry. The aim of the campaign is also to participate in initiatives and projects to promote the development of the Peruvian coffee industry at national and international level.
