Our country had a successful participation at Foodex Japan 2019, one of the main Asian events specializing in food and drinks. The twelve Peruvian companies present at the trade fair returned with business deals worth $12.3 million, informed the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ).
$3.3 million was generated during the fair and $9 million correspond to expected sales to be realized in the next twelve months. Foodex Japan was held from March 5 to 8 in Chiba, near Tokyo, and was widely visited by buyers from South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, the United States, Singapore and Malaysia, among others.
Products such as avocado, coffee, frozen foods (mango and avocado), cocoa derivatives and other fruits were exhibited at the Peruvian stand. Processed vegetables, fruits, quinoa, desserts, pestos and tapenades were also featured, as well as natural vegetable oils with omega 3, antioxidants, sacha inchi oil and snacks and dehydrated fruits, among others.
In the pavilion, decorated with the Super Food Peru brand, visitors were offered a tasting of our national drink, under the new 'Pisco, Spirit of Peru' brand, and a culinary demonstration with avocado, quinoa, kiwicha and cocoa. This space was visited by a great number of importers from Australia.
Foodex Japan is the largest food and drinks trade fair in the Asia-Pacific region. It has been held for 40 years and is a benchmark for learning about new consumer trends. It does in addition represent an excellent opportunity to finalize business contacts.
Aimed at an exclusively professional audience, it attracts a large number of leading food buyers, from wholesalers to retailers, supermarkets, caterers, drinks importers and restaurants.
CONQUERING ASIA
Peruvian agricultural exports to Asia totaled $566 million in 2018, an increase of 26.8% over the previous year. China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan represented 80% of the total sent to this continent.
Exports to Japan totaled $67 million, showing an increase of 13.8%. The main products shipped were frozen asparagus ($16 million), fresh or dried avocados ($14 million), frozen fruits, mainly blueberries and mandarins ($7 million), fresh Cavendish bananas ($4 million) and mangos ($4 million), among others.
