On the right track: Peru's agricultural sector continues to be the focus of major world markets. It is fruit, in particular, that has been in strong demand abroad.
"In August, the good performance of agro-exports is mainly due to higher fruit sales (US$ 329 million); that is, 38% more than a similar month last year (US$ 239 million)," announced the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
The favorites
This result was mainly due to the large number of shipments of mandarins (US$ 65 million / +60%), blueberries (US$ 112 million / +44%) and also the wonderful avocado (US$ 114 million / +39%).
It is important to note that these three products have always had a significant impact on foreign markets.
This year, for example, mandarins have managed to gain more ground, to such an extent that this Super Food is already on the list of the most widely distributed citrus fruits abroad.
According to Fresh Cargo Peru, between January and August, 198,996 tons of citrus fruits were exported, among which we include this powerful antioxidant. Of these, the most abundant export was the W. Murcott mandarin. Let us not forget that, in addition, varieties such as the Satsuma, Kara, Malvacea, King, Dancy and Wilkings are all grown on our lands.
"Up to July 15, exports of mandarins of the early varieties totaled 59,258 gross tons for US$ 60 million, which represents an increase of 39% in volume and 51% in value compared to the same period in 2019," detailed the Agraria.pe website.
On the other hand, after a successful season in Europe, blueberries are preparing to conquer the Taiwanese market thanks to their flavor and quality.
A few weeks ago, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) announced that, following a successful agreement between the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ), which oversees phytosanitary activities in the Asian country, and Peru's National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), the green light was given for the entry of this sweet and juicy blue sphere to the eastern island.
Recall that, this year, Peru managed to position itself as the leading exporter of blueberries worldwide.
The delicious and nutritious Peruvian avocado is also shaping up to be a worldwide favorite. It’s not for nothing that our country stands out as the second largest supplier abroad.
Recently, news of its success in France was released. Of all the fruits imported to France, a considerable volume was avocado.
"France imported US$ 40 million of Peruvian fruit during the first half of the year, 24% more than in 2019," revealed Fresh Fruit.
More varieties
Other domestic products also influenced the good performance of exports.
"Also contributing to the increase in Peruvian agro-exports were higher sales of sugar/chancaca (US$ 10 million / +90%), ginger (US$ 8 million / +52%), onion (US$ 10 million / +28.7%) and coffee (US$ 86 million / +4%)," added Mincetur in their press release.
Fishing sector continues to grow
Fishing is another area for which favorable growth has emerged.
"In both its traditional and non-traditional forms, it was another sector that grew in August and for the second month in a row (+93% in August and +5% in July). These results were mainly due to the increased production and sale of fishmeal (US$ 259 million /+371%), fish oil (US$ 53 million / +23.6%) and squid (US$ 100 million / +10.7%)," added the Ministry in its statement.
They also noted that, despite the health crisis caused by the outbreak of the new coronavirus, Peruvian supplies remain strong and continue to cross borders. This great output is expected to continue.
