International demand for our national drink continues to grow. Shipments of pisco abroad totaled $1.49 million in the first quarter of the year, which shows an increase of 50% compared to the same period in 2018, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERU) announced.
The main market is the United States, with a demand of $661,728 (28.5% increase), followed by Spain with $212,415 (24.7%). The most dynamic destinations in this period were Ecuador (+2.291%), Colombia (+690.0%) and Australia (+124.9%). France, Australia and Brazil also begin to make a difference with a high level of imports registered, compared to their total consumption in 2018.
Pisco exports have shown sustained growth in recent years. In 2009 shipments abroad totaled US$ 1.3 million and in 2018 accumulated US$ 5.7 million, growing 320 % in this period. Our national drink currently reaches 33 markets in the Americas, Asia and Europe.
PERMANENT PROMOTION OF PROMPERÚ
After the presentation of the "Pisco, Spirit of Peru" brand at the beginning of this year, as part of a strategy to give international prominence to the attributes that make our drink a unique and distinct distillate, PROMPERÚ continues its actions in various platforms for national and international commercial promotion.
The brand has thus been present at different specialized events, such as the Madrid Fusión (Spain) culinary conference or Foodex (Japan), one of the main food and beverage events in Asia.
Pisco positioning activities will continue in the following months: PROMPERÚ plans to exhibit more than 50 bottles of the spirit at the Summer Fancy Food, the main food show in the United States, or the Bar Convent Brooklyn, an event that attracts thousands of people.
The Commercial Offices of Peru Abroad (OCEX) in Germany, New York and Miami also carried out activities to promote pisco, and one is soon to be performed in France. A third trade mission with buyers is also being organized, in coordination with PROMPERÚ, for the second semester.
In total, PROMPERÚ plans 42 activities abroad to promote pisco in international markets, including trade fairs, knowledge workshops, tastings, activations and cocktail mixology events.
Producers and exporters of pisco also have the opportunity to present themselves at regional business meetings, which are attended by foreign buyers, as well as at activities carried out in different markets to promote tourism and gastronomy.
