As part of the dissemination strategy for the "Peruvian coffees, unique specialties" industry brand, between August 18 and 23 twelve buyers from Germany and the United States visited ten companies who export specialty coffees from the Junín and Pasco regions.
The purpose of the trade mission was to present Peruvian products from the towns of Pangoa, Mazamari, Pichanaqui and La Merced (Junín) and Villa Rica (Pasco) to representatives from German and U.S. coffee chains and distributors.
Through a series of coffee tastings, foreign buyers learned about the high quality of the product and were able to find out more about the organic certifications of these regions, as well as other differentiating elements of this product from the central jungle.
Specialists from PROMPERU's Commercial Offices of Peru Abroad (OCEX) with offices in Hamburg (Germany) and Houston (United States) participated in this trade route, as well as representatives from the Office of the Central Macro-region.
It is important to mention that the Southern-Central Specialty Coffee Trade Mission took place between August 4 and 9, with the participation of 19 prominent buyers from China, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia, who contacted producers in Cusco, Pasco and Junin.
Coffees from Junín and Pasco
Specialty coffees are distinguished by their superior quality due to their origin, variety and consistency in their physical and sensory properties, and in their cultural practices. Due to the diversity of climates and soils, Peru has about ten coffee producing regions.
The world demand for coffee is growing significantly every year, as does the growing trend for specialty coffees, since consumers are increasingly strict about quality, properties, health benefits and aromas, among other aspects, and which lead the industry to look for a differentiated product with special organoleptic characteristics. In addition, they must have a score equal to or greater than 80, according to the standards of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).
Efforts should moreover be focused on entering the Nordic market, these countries being amongst those with the highest per capita coffee consumption worldwide and where there is a demand for specialty coffees with 84 points or more. These include Finland (26 pounds per person), Norway (22 pounds), Denmark (19 pounds) and Sweden (18 pounds), which are willing to pay a higher price since coffee is not produced in their geographical location, representing a great opportunity for our exports.
Information
Total coffee exports in 2018 amounted to US$ 682 million. Junín and Pasco shipments reached US$ 42.7 million and US$ 6.2 million, respectively.
