Peru, a megadiverse country with a wide range of unique ecosystems and species, is committed to becoming a leader in sustainability, reflecting this commitment in its export practices.
Active collaboration between the public and private sectors, academia, and other key stakeholders has been crucial in aligning all value chains towards this challenge. This joint effort fosters the implementation of concrete actions to address global challenges, ensuring that Peruvian products meet high environmental and social standards.
One of the most prominent mechanisms in this effort is biotrade. This business model, based on the sustainable use of native biodiversity resources, has been adopted by various organizations. It promotes investment and trade in line with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, supporting local economic development and generating added value in competitive products for both domestic and international markets.
In 2023, exports of these products exceeded USD 510 million. Among the main products that stand out in Peruvian biotrade are quinoa, tara, cochineal, Brazil nuts, passion fruit, and maca. These represent a majority share of 81% of total prioritized native biodiversity exports.
Peru is demonstrating that it is possible to combine economic growth with sustainability, offering high-value-added products that benefit both local communities and the natural environment.
