An ideal destination for global events!
Owing to its economic stability, in the first half of 2017 Peru was chosen as the host of 11 major international events scheduled over the next two years. These events will draw 7,000 people from Latin America, the United States and Europe and will generate around 15 million soles of revenue, according to statistics from the Peruvian Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PROMPERÚ).
The international events will drive a surge in tourism and bring a large inflow of cash due to the number of people attending the meetings. The largest events include the International Orthopedics and Traumatology Congress with around 1,200 attendees, scheduled for next year; the Latin American Nephrology and Hypertension Congress, which expects around 2000 participants in 2019; and the International Conference on Cosmetic and Laser Dermatology, which will draw around 1,000 people from all over the globe, also in 2019.
A team effort
PROMPERÚ provided support to different organizations and trade associations as they prepared their bids to maximize the impact of their presentations and encourage decision-makers to vote for Peru as a perfect destination for international events.
Additionally, the country’s various Convention Bureaus gave advice about how to present each city in the bids and provided information about each location’s infrastructure. After a sustained effort, Lima, Cusco and Trujillo were chosen as host cities.
Site of major events
Peru has several years of experience organizing large international meetings. In 2014, it put on the regional WTTC fair and the COP 20, and in 2015 the 13th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities was held in Arequipa. It also hosted the 13th Inter-American Congress of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Tourism of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Meetings of the Board of Governors of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. In 2016, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum was held in Peru.
Additionally, last year Peru was named host of the 2019 Latin American Poultry Farming Congress, an activity declared to be of national interest. The Andean country will also welcome the World Potato Congress, bringing together important presenters on this food staple in the city of Cusco in 2018.
