The exhibition "Sipán: Mystery and Splendor in Northern Peru", which was set up at the international airport of Tocumen and the Albrook Mall, exceeded 20,000 visits, making it one of the busiest temporary exhibitions ever held in Panama.
This exhibition was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), through PROMPERU and the Peru’s Foreign Trade Office (OCEX) in the Panama, with support from the Peruvian Embassy in Panama and Copa Airlines, an airline that has a direct flight from Panama to Chiclayo.
The owner of the sector, Edgar Vásquez, attended the opening of the event. Vásquez highlighted the effort made by all the institutions involved, since this was the first time that the Lord of Sipán was fully presented outside Peru.
The stand at Albrook Mall, which occupied 150 m2 to accurately reproduce the tomb of the Lord of Sipán, included showcases with replicas of the treasure and life-size recreations of the ancient Moche ruler and his entourage.
Meanwhile, a second exhibit was presented at Tocumen International Airport. This smaller exhibition also included audio-visual elements and life-size personifications of entourage members, dressed in the style of the Moche culture.
The period clothing and replicas of the original ornaments on show at both exhibitions, including the gold and turquoise earrings, peanut fruit necklace, banners and other royal emblems of this Moche ruler, were made by local artisans and restorers from the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, led by the renowned archaeologist Walter Alva.
PANAMA–CHICLAYO FLIGHT
The exhibition 'Sipán: Mystery and Splendor in Northern Peru' served as a preamble to commemorate the third anniversary of the Panama–Chiclayo air route.
The two weekly flights between Panama and the capital of Lambayeque, which began in 2016, have become the main gateway for Central American tourists to Peru's northern route, whose cultural and gastronomic attractions make it one of Latin America’s most thriving destinations.
