Peruvian design at the leading edge of fashion! Peru’s selection of urban-style clothing won recognition at Colombiamoda 2017, Colombia’s largest fashion event, held in the city of Medellín. It gained attention for the quality of Peruvian cotton and the innovation and creativity evident in the clothing.
This is the 12th year in a row that Peru has participated in the major international trade show. This year alone, the 15 small and medium-size companies from Peru negotiated deals worth US$16 million and did US$370,000 of business at the event itself.
International buyers showed interest in the Peruvian products owing to their high quality standards. The main countries that were won over by the Peruvian textiles were: Colombia, Costa Rica, United States, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Chile, Bolivia, Spain, Aruba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Portugal.
Peru’s participation at Colombiamoda
Colombia is one of the main Latin American markets for the Peruvian clothing industry. In 2016 alone, 165 Peruvian companies dispatched US$57 million worth of merchandise to Colombia. From January to May of this year, that figure came to US$15.4 million.
Colombiamoda features some 450 exhibitors from the textile, clothing, design and fashion, leather goods, footwear, leather, jewelry and costume jewelry industries. The event receives more than 8,500 local and international visitors from distribution chains, boutique store networks and brands.
This year, the Peruvian companies exhibited cotton clothing in the “Jeanswear” areas and brands and franchises in “New Business Models.”
The Peruvian products on display at the fair included cotton trousers and shorts, shirts, blouses, dresses, babywear and women's jackets, as well button-up shirts, button-up blouses, dresses and synthetic panties.
The “Perú Textiles” brand
Peru’s participation in various international events has served as a platform to promote the “Perú Textiles” brand. The goal of the brand is to position the Peruvian fashion industry in the mid to high-end segment of retail.
The aim is also to introduce to world to a brand based on natural fibers such as pima cotton and alpaca, and to position and showcase the Andean country’s exotic, ancestral and natural fibers.
With “Perú Textiles”, clothing made in Peru will be recognized worldwide as a quality product that meets the highest international standards.
The brand’s logo is a fine fiber that evokes the Peruvian Andes, the homeland of our renowned alpaca.
Looking ahead, Peru is on track this year to export US$1.195 billion worth of textiles and clothing, similar to the volume achieved in 2016.
