Peru present at Ventana Sur

A Peruvian delegation arrived in Argentina with a selection of films and projects that will be presented within the framework of the 10th edition of Ventana Sur, the largest audiovisual market in Latin America.

Peru is seeking to consolidate itself as an important location for the national and international film and audiovisual industry. Promperú and the Ministry of Culture are therefore promoting participation in areas related to international audiovisual promotion. The Peruvian producers present at Ventana Sur will be able to present projects and establish links that allow them to co-produce with other countries. It is thereby intended to promote the internationalization of Peruvian cinema and its artists, technicians and professionals.

The Directorate of Audiovisual, Phonography and New Media (DAFO) at the Ministry of Culture of Peru, the office in charge of managing public funds for film and audiovisual production, will provide information on government stimuli to production and co-production. The aim is to promote artistic, professional and creative exchange between different countries through financial support. It should be noted that the same objective led Peru and Chile to sign an Audiovisual Coproduction Agreement this year.

PROMPERÚ is seeking to position 'Film In Peru', a tool for the promotion of locations that exist throughout Peru, both naturally and culturally. It thereby seeks to position Peru as an outstanding place to promote audiovisual production, something which could become a focal point and attracting the international production of commercials, video clips, documentaries and feature films. ‘Film In Peru’ is also an information platform offering facilities to producers interested in carrying out international projects in Peru.

Among the Peruvian films to be screened in theaters at Ventana Sur between December 10 and 14 is the film Retablo, with the presence of its director, Alvaro Delgado Aparicio, a film that explores the LGTBQ universe, a subject that has had significant exposure in Latin American cinema in recent years. The language spoken in the film is Quechua and it has received international awards, including three awards at the Berlin Film Festival.

Other screenings include Gen Hi8, about the life of a 15-year-old teenager in Lima in the early 1990s; Prueba de fondo (The Ultimate Race), a documentary about a group of marathon runners from the Central Highlands of Peru, with a special focus on Inés Melchor, a multi-champion pan-American long-distance runner; and Los helechos (What couples do), a film about three couples spending a weekend together in which conflicts arise and passions are unleashed.

Director Melina León presents her debut feature, Canción sin nombre (Song without a name), one of six works selected in Copia Final, co-produced by Peru, Spain and the U.S. and winner of "Cine del mañana" 2018 (WIP section of the Lima Film Festival), which is scheduled for release in 2019.

Also present at Ventana Sur will be animation projects being developed such as Un reino entre las nubes (The Kingdom in the Clouds); AINBO, spirit of the jungle; and Isi y Nantu conocen a las plantas de poder.

The Peruvian delegation consists of the directors Óscar Bermeo Ocaña, Miguel Miyahira Moromisato; producers José Zelada, Milton Guerrero and Stephan Succar Conroy; Roberto Barba, producer and sales agent; and Cecilia Gómez de la Torre, in charge of distribution at Tondero, among others.
