In order to share, discuss, and create communities around innovation, digital manufacturing and technologies, a delegation of 20 Peruvian researchers and designers attended FAB14 - the 14th FabLabs International Conference, held in Toulouse, France, last July.
Several public institutions work hand in hand with the private sector, startups and universities in the creation of research projects to take on the challenges of innovation, evolution and competitiveness.
In this sense, FAB14 was the opportunity to present a selection of Peruvian projects that, in addition to seeking to preserve our cultural wealth, have a strong economic and social impact.
The most noteworthy projects were the digital manufacture of chocolate molds of Peruvian icons by San Martín de Porres University FabLab; video games and applications (virtual and augmented reality) that allow children to learn about the Moche and Chimú pre-Inca cultures, which were also by San Martín de Porres University FabLab; and a tool made with acrylic sheets for children from 8 years old – which can also be used by blind people – that allows them to learn about traditional Peruvian fabrics, presented by FabLab UNI.
Chevron STEM Education Awards
The Chevron STEM Education Awards 2018 were held as part of FAB14. This competition rewards educators who demonstrate innovative ideas in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teaching through the use of digital manufacturing, including electronics and programming, and hands-on learning.
As a result of this contest, Peruvian FabLabs TECSUP and DIGITOYS received awards. TECSUP ranked third for its "Mechanical Speed Reducer" project, a gear system that reduces the speed delivered by a DC motor and which has been manufactured entirely using digital manufacturing techniques and equipment.
For its part, DIGITOYS, the first Peruvian FabLab for children, tied for third place with "Fantastic Creatures", a 3D character design and fabrication workshop.
It should be noted that the top three in these awards receive cash prizes, and the awards provide the opportunity for work to be shared at the FabLabs International Conference, as well as across the network.
