Our country was present at IMEX Frankfurt, the leading international trade fair for meetings tourism in Europe, which took place from May 21 to 23 in Germany.
The sectors targeted by the event – the incentive travel market and the meetings and congresses market – are of great importance for Peru as a specialized destination due to the spendings per tourist, which is up to three times greater than the average traveler.
A this year's event, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) participated along with five companies representing this sector. In addition, it was supported by the Office of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Germany, in a collective effort to strengthen the positioning of our country as an ideal destination for events, conferences and incentives.
Last year, IMEX brought together 3,500 exhibitors from 150 countries, generating around 68,500 meetings between individual appointments, group appointments and stand presentations. At that event, the Peruvian participation generated potential business worth US$ 8.2 million, and this year it is estimated to have increased by 10%.
SPECIALIZED TOURISM
The meetings tourism sector represents approximately 20 % of international visitors worldwide and is characterized by sustained growth rates, which implies high profitability and contribution to the development of other related sectors, such as the industrial, mining, education and agro-industrial sectors, among others.
In Peru, the total number of foreigners attracted by the well-known "meetings industry" accounts for 9% of the total number of arrivals in the country, and has experienced an accumulated growth of 50% between 2013 and 2018, according to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
Peru benefits from a strategic location in the region, with expanding air connectivity, specialized services according to global demands, as well as extensive experience in the development of major international events, to which we add the wonderful cultural and gastronomic offers.
All these attributes enable us to compete with other countries in the region and across the world, so we are currently working actively in the prioritized markets to identify and arrange international meetings that are hosted by our country.
