Chilean media such as Mega TV, the newspaper La Tercera and the magazines Capital and Chef & Hotel were amazed during their stay in Arequipa, where they tasted the gastronomic delights of its picanterías and discovered the city's cultural wealth.
The press trip was organized by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) as part of its strategy to promote diversification of the country's tourist destinations. It also took advantage on this occasion of the new direct flight connecting Santiago de Chile with the White City, which will be operated by Jet Smart airlines.
JOURNALISTS IN AREQUIPA
The journalist Gonzalo Argandoña (La Tercera) and influencer Carlos Ruiz (@GoCarlos) highlighted the visit to the picanterías of La Nueva Palomino and La Benita, which perfectly portray the delightful dishes and rich tradition passed down by generations. They also enjoyed a type of Peruvian chocolate in Arequipa.
"Thanks to this trip we were able to tell Chilean journalists about our ancestral food, customs and history. We talked about the Sociedad Picantera de Arequipa, which brings together about 40 traditional picanterías that maintain their family recipes. We have a lot of history and love to share with everyone through our cooking", said Mónica Huerta of La Nueva Palomino.
"As soon as we found out that they were going to visit us, we were thrilled for my mom. I told her to be present and that we would cook live. Because that is what we do: enamor people through the culture of Arequipa and its gastronomy", said Roger Falcón, son of Benita Quicaño from the La Benita and Victoria picanterías.
The journalists also visited the colorful market of San Camilo, where they obtained ingredients for the Arequipa regional cooking class. The press people also had a cooking class that included the preparation of chupe mestizo and chicha de guiñapo, as well as the inevitable stuffed rocoto peppers and ocopa, among others.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
The beautiful architecture of Arequipa also impressed the Chilean journalists. The visit to the Plaza de Armas and the Monastery of Santa Catalina attracted the attention of the visitors, who were also able to visit the Andean Sanctuary Museum, where the famous Juanita mummy is on display.
The visit to the Sillar Route also allowed them to get to know the origin of the raw material that makes Arequipa known as the 'White City'. Finally, @GoCarlos, the group's adventurer, plans to stay a few more days in the area because he will climb up to the Misti volcano. All these experiences caused the journalists to be amazed by what this city has to offer.
This activity is part of PROMPERÚ's strategy to encourage repeat travel to Latin America, designed to promote destinations such as Arequipa, and showing the diversity of its architectural, cultural, natural and gastronomic attractions.
