A study conducted by PROMPERÚ through its service portal Turismo In revealed that the segments that will recover most quickly for local tourism in Peru will be millennials and Gen Z from socioeconomic levels A and B, as they will be some of the first who are willing to travel, reported the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Edgar Vásquez.
According to the analysis of the new national vacationer in 2020, which was presented through a webinar to more than a thousand people, millennials and Gen Z – groups that are perceived as less vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic – will prioritize nearby destinations.
The new normality which we are experiencing in the land of the Incas will initially receive vacationers without children, mostly consisting of friends and couples.
Who are millennials? Also known as Generation Y, they are people born between the years 1981 and 1993 approximately. While Generation Z are those born between 1994 and 2010. Both groups have witnessed the digitalization of services and have developed the habit of shopping online.
New motivations
As tourism activities resume once again, leisure and recreational travel and visits to family and friends will be the most frequent, the report says.
It is anticipated that four key characteristics will be taken into consideration by post-pandemic vacationers when choosing a destination: low infection rate, availability of local products for consumers, plenty of outdoor spaces, and proximity to their place of residence.
The destinations in highest demand will be those offering sunny beaches, contact with nature and open spaces, whose attractions can be explored independently or in small groups.
Health comes first
The search for outdoor entertainment, in close proximity to nature, as well as gatherings of family and friends will continue to be present; however, the variable that will determine the choice of trip will be the feeling of safety that the destination can offer.
Safety will be a key factor in prioritizing the choice of one destination over another. So tour operators, means of transport, hotels and restaurants must respect all safety protocols and technical standards issued by the Government for the resumption of activities.
Although most local travelers will prefer to travel by airplane, travel by car will be a popular alternative due to greater comfort, privacy and safety.
Tourists will be demanding and very careful in terms of health protection and physical distancing.
Seriousness, above all else
The study concludes by assuring that vacationers will prefer serious tourism companies that have implemented the safety measures recommended by the government and therefore have high standards of cleanliness, have soap and gel dispensers, offer masks and gloves, and measure people’s temperature.
The post-COVID traveler expects tourism services to offer a reduced capacity in hotels, restaurants, tours and attractions. In addition, they will want to receive information on health protection and will demand that establishments implement prevention protocols.
This information will be strategic for the design of new business models that respond to the new situation.
