Machu Picchu District Council committed to preserve Inca citadel

This new world wonder will not lose its magic thanks to the new garbage collection system, set up to counteract the high residue accumulation indexes due to thousands of visitors at the sanctuary.

One of Latin America’s most visited touristic destinations, guarding historic secrets of the Inca civilization. However, 13 tons of garbage accumulates each day in Puente Ruinas, access point to Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary in Cusco.

The citadel’s terrain is very rugged, with no roads to transport the residues. They can only be collected twice a week by train, there is no other place because it is a natural protected area.

Looking for a solution, Machu Picchu district council made an agreement with Ajeper group, donated two garbage compactor machines to process organic and inorganic waste. An initiative coming from their commitment and social environmental responsibility.

Both machines have a daily process capacity of 15 tons, and will help to minimize pollution impact on the Inca citadel, thus preventing UNESCO from declaring it an endangered patrimony in the future.
