The Peruvian citadel of Kuélap was voted Best Far & Away - Overseas Attraction by the readers of National Geographic Traveller in the United Kingdom. At the ceremony held in London on November 27, the Kuélap fortress topped the two other finalists in the category: Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, France and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, United States.
The National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards 2017 chooses the best places, experiences, hotels, travel agencies, attractions, publications and more. Finalists are hand-picked by the magazine, and readers then vote on the winner.
In recent years, Kuélap has attracted a deluge of attention as promotional efforts ramp up and new flights and a new gondola provide quick and direct access to the fortress.
Kuélap was also named one of the “Coolest Destinations” by the Wall Street Journal on its most recent list of the best destinations to visit in 2018. It has also been featured in documentaries seen by millions aired by the BBC and shot in the Amazonas region.
These distinctions boost the work of the Peruvian Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PROMPERÚ) to promote the greater northern Peru region and tap into the enormous potential of its destinations, spreading out the country’s tourism to the benefit of more Peruvians.
Pat Riddell, Editor of National Geographic Traveller, stated: “We had an incredible response from our readers, and their opinions were as sharp and insightful as ever as they shared their tried-and-true favorites with us so we can honor the best in travel.”
