Peru triumphs at the World Travel Awards 2019

Peru won three awards at the World Travel Awards 2019 (WTA), considered 'The Oscars of Tourism'. The award ceremony took place on November 28 at the Royal Opera House in Muscat (Oman).
'World's Leading Culinary Destination', 'World’s Leading Cultural Destination' and 'World’s Leading Tourist Attraction: Machu Picchu' were the three awards Peru received from the international tourism industry. It should be noted that this is not the first time that the country has triumphed in these categories, Peruvian cuisine having received the most awards for eight consecutive years.
"The world is giving increasingly recognition to the wonders of our country: our cuisine, our iconic Machu Picchu and our ancient culture. It also supports the promotional efforts that we have been carrying out at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, PROMPERÚ and our Commercial Offices abroad, with the purpose of attracting more tourists and boosting this industry", stressed the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Edgar Vásquez.
The three awards
The renowned Peruvian gastronomy has conquered palates and become a travel motivation for thousands of people, the reason which led it to be awarded the prize as 'World World's Leading Culinary Destination'.
The executive president of PROMPERÚ, Luis Torres, pointed out in this respect that, through the 'Perú, Mucho Gusto' brand, PROMPERÚ has been promoting gastronomy and reassessing the uses, customs and ingredients of all Peruvian regions; also positioning the Peruvian Superfoods, Cafés del Perú and Pisco, Spirit of Peru industry brands. "It is worth noting that it has contributed to create areas of regional identity and integration", he said.
Machu Picchu, recognized as the 'World’s Leading Culinary Destination', is the Inca sanctuary that includes archeological sites and a great variety of ecosystems, becoming the icon of Peruvian tourism. It has in addition been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and has received numerous international awards.
The third award for Peru was as 'World’s Leading Cultural Destination', due to the country's valuable archaeological heritage, since we are one of the cradles of human civilization. Our country does in addition have a vibrant and active contemporary cultural life, with museums and art galleries that show off the best of our artists' production.
