Peru placed third on the Top Country list at the annual “Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2018” compiled by the Wanderlust travel magazine from the United Kingdom. Representatives of different countries, airlines, tour operators, professionals in the field of tourism and others attended the ceremony in London.
The top destinations of the Wanderlust awards are picked by more than 2000 of the magazine’s readers, who are expert travelers. Canada and New Zealand were voted first and second, respectively. The full list of winners will be published in the April print edition.
In recent years, British media has heaped attention on Peru. The Amazonas region was brought to life for millions of viewers through BBC documentaries, and Choquequirao was named the best region to visit in 2017 by Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide publisher. National Geographic Traveller also named Kuélap as the best Far & Away - Overseas Attraction.
Wanderlust is considered one of the UK’s premiere travel magazines, with more than 100,000 readers and 10 print editions per year.
From January to November of 2017, Peru welcomed a total of 3,627,283 foreign tourists, or 6% more than the same period in 2016. 65,419 of these tourists hailed from the United Kingdom.
According to PROMPERÚ’s Foreign Tourist Profile, British tourists spent an average of US$ 1824 during their stay in Peru (more than double the overall average of US$ 964). They also stay for 14 days on average and are especially interested in activities related to culture, nature and adventure.
