The New York Times surprises its followers with a 360 video Of "El Salto del Fraile"

The prestigious American newspaper, The New York Times, surprised its Facebook followers by posting a 360 video of the traditional "Salto del Fraile"; the risky maneuver performed daily by a mysterious monk who dives from the top of a cliff to the sea between immense rocks and dangerous waters on the Costa Verde, and which conceals a story of love and pain that has been kept alive over the years.

The interactive video allows you to enjoy the amazing show as if you were there, and invites users to visit and experience the risky act of love from the seventeenth century on the Lima coast.

About the legend

Around 1860, among the noble families who lived in Lima, the Marquis of Sarria and Molina stood out, having recently been widowed, and with a beautiful 12-year-old daughter, Clara, who was cared for by a nanny called Evarista.

The noble nanny had a son named Francisco, and it is said that he was 3 years older than the girl. Francisco, who was doted on by the Marquis, fell in love with Clara over time, to such an extent that the beautiful young girl became pregnant and caused a real shock in the society of the time. The Marquis, bewildered and offended by such an outrage, ordered Francisco to be locked up in the Convent of La Recoleta and to become a friar. As for the girl, her father decided to send her on a voyage.

After this episode, the young man now wore the habits of the Dominican monks and helped Father Mendoza at mass.

When the day of Clara's departure arrived, embarking from Callao and traveling with her father, perhaps never to return, the young woman's nursemaid told her that her son would be waiting for her at the top of a cliff and so when her ship passed the coast of Chorrillos, she could say good-bye.

So at 5:30 in the afternoon, on the highest rock, the friar said goodbye to his beloved with his hands raised as she watched him with a broken heart. Suddenly, he threw himself into the depths of the sea leaving only the love that both professed. The young girl, in the face of such pain, saw no better idea than to jump into the sea from where she was standing. Thus, the two would finally be together for eternity and no prejudice would ever separate them.
