Adrenaline rush! 5 places for an extreme adventure in Lima

The city of Lima doesn’t just stand out for its history, sightseeing routes and fine cuisine. On top of this, there’s a wide range of adventure activities that can be enjoyed on a shoestring and without going too far.

Here are some options to leave the stress behind and have a unique experience that will test your endurance and adrenaline.

Adventure at Mirador El Triángulo

Anyone who loves hiking cannot miss the El Triángulo viewpoint, also known as the "cloud mattress" as it has a utopian landscape that makes visitors feel close to heaven. It is located in the Villa María del Triunfo district.

Initially, the trail to reach this place was created for extreme sports. In fact nowadays, as well as enjoying an unparalleled view, visitors can also do ATV, dune buggy and motorcross activities. It should be noted that this area is looked after by the Apu Siqay project, an organization in charge of keeping the site in good condition.

To get there, take the electric train to María Auxiliadora station (the ticket costs S/ 1.50), and from there take a taxi to Jr. Señor de Lampa, where you will find the gate to enter the site. It can be visited from Monday to Sunday, with admission until 6.00 p.m. It’s a 4-mile walk to the top, so it is advisable to wear sneakers and light clothing, and carry water and a snack for the road. Admission is totally free. 

For those who wish to enjoy the view at its best, it is advisable to wait for the sunset (from 5.30 to 6.00 p.m.).

Meeting in the skies above Pachacamac

Having breakfast, lunch or dinner 45 meters above the ground has become one of the experiences that adrenaline junkies and foodies cannot miss. With Dinner in the Sky, the dream has become a reality. The table is designed for 22 people, a chef and a couple of assistants. The service offers a varied and select menu designed for the three daily meals. All of the dishes are inspired by Peruvian culinary art: breakfast is served at 10.00 a.m, lunch at 1.00 and 4.00 p.m., and finally dinner at 6 p.m. accompanied by a spectacular sunset.

Dinner in the Sky is located in the Pachacamac district and can be visited by making a prior reservation through [email protected]. It runs from Wednesday to Sunday. The experience costs USD 140.

Paragliding in Miraflores

In this district – also known as one of the tourist points of Lima – there is a paraport (located in Raimondi Park, near the Costa Verde) from which visitors can soar through the sky in a paraglider.

Here you will find a range of packages for this extreme sport. The outing lasts around two hours and prices vary between 200 and 400 soles.

Rappel in Santa Eulalia

The city's mountain range boasts one of the most exciting earthly paradises in this part of Peru. Santa Eulalia is one of these. Here tourists can discover the famous Autisha Canyon – known for being one of the deepest in Lima. To get here you have to trek several kilometers from the center. Visitors must navigate several winding and narrow paths which have walls reaching over 650 feet in height.

Admission costs S/ 5 and, once inside, you can choose between activities such as rappelling (with a descent of 180 feet). If you’re looking for even more adventure, another few miles’ walk will take you to the Autisha Bridge where you can bungee jump.

Cycling in Azpitia

Also known as the Balcony of Heaven, this is located just two hours from the city of Lima. This place surprises with its wide array of extreme adventures: trekking, canoeing and, in addition, it offers attractive routes for those who love cycling. Each activity can be done for around S/ 20. It is also possible to go on an ATV tour. The region’s dry climate allows for visits all year round.
