We all know that the return of Machu Picchu as a tourist destination means much more than it appears at first sight: with the strength of the Apus, the Inca Sanctuary is giving the world a ray of hope after several months of pandemic.
That is why millions of travelers around the world are celebrating this return by investigating the secrets that this magical structure holds. And that is why Machu Picchu is today the second most searched wonder of the world on Google.
As reported by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ). In fact, it was only below the Taj Mahal (although very close behind), Machu Picchu being the first choice for Internet users as regards wonders of the world, especially one day before and one day after its reopening (October 31 and August 2 respectively).
The Inca fortress thus equaled the Roman Coliseum in number of searches and easily surpassed the Christ the Redeemer.
A few days ago, the Taj Mahal also opened its doors to international tourism, something which caused the largest number of Google searches, especially from a good percentage of the Indian population, estimated at 1300 million inhabitants.

An amazing show
On November 1, the eyes of the world were focused on the Llacta de Machu Picchu, in Cusco, where the Reopening Ceremony of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu was held. Various authorities attended the event, including the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rocio Barrios, as well as local authorities.
A spectacular setting of 45 artists on stage performed the traditional Pago a la Tierra (Payment to the Earth), while the walls of the sanctuary employed video mapping technology to project the greetings and good wishes posted by travelers from around the world.
The citadel looked spectacular that night and it was also honored by various Peruvian artists, such as Daniela Darcourt, Ezio Oliva and Guillermo Bussinger, who sang part of the song 'Volver' to mark the domestic tourism campaign launched by the Peruvian Government.
The most interested countries
According to Google's calculations, countries such as Chile, Colombia, the US, Argentina, Belgium and New Zealand were the ones that carried out the most Internet searches about Machu Picchu at the beginning of November. It also reached users from Costa Rica, Poland and faraway Finland.
It is important to highlight this global visibility of Machu Picchu, especially in nations such as Chile and the US, where a very large number of tourists visit Peru. The results also show that the keyword positioning of Machu Picchu was very similar in both countries.
For PROMPERÚ, the reopening of this leading destination marks a milestone in the reactivation of tourism in the South American country, showing the world that by gradually embarking on activities in the industry and through the implementation of protocols for this activity, it is possible to receive visits from national and foreign tourists.
