Peru had a good catch at Seafood Expo Global 2018, exceeding the initial expectations of $90 million in deals by 70.2%. Twenty-two Peruvian companies attended the event and came away with US$153.2 million in business deals over the next twelve months.
The expo is the world’s largest fishing and aquaculture event, held on April 24-26 in Brussels, Belgium. In attendance were 1850 companies from 79 countries, presenting their products to more than 28,500 industry professionals.
Based on information provided by the importers and exporters grouped together in Peru’s pavilion, the Peruvian contingent made 1239 business contacts, 550 of which were with new companies.
The buyers that showed the greatest interest in Peru's products were France, Russia, Spain, Germany, China and Italy. The nation’s most sought-after products included scallops, prawns, anchovies, squid and hake.
Super Foods Peru was the overarching brand for the different products, putting their special qualities and health benefits on display for consumers.
Peru’s participation was organized by PROMPERU, with support from Peru’s Foreign Trade Office (OCEX in Spanish) in Belgium.
It should be noted that Europe buys 35% of nontraditional products from Peru’s fishing industry, equivalent to US$332 million in 2017. Its main markets are Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Germany, Holland and Portugal.
