Peru: source of inspiration

Every person touched by our country carries a name, a memory, a story deeply in their heart and mind. From a gesture, a landscape, a detail... Everything inspires in Peru.

Peru is such a rich and varied mixture of cultures that it is impossible not to be fascinated with all its manifestations; from the purest of our ideals and dreams, to the most complex expressions such as gastronomy or music that lead us to be recognized everywhere. Today, the fashion world is also opening its eyes and is witnessing that Peru inspires. It does so with its natural fibers and colors, with its fabrics and traditional techniques, with its particular shapes and designs and above all with a thousand-year-old history that combines pride, mystery and reflection.

For years, Peruvian creations have illuminated the fashion shows of the world. Full skirts, embroidered capes and Puno and Cusco hats were part of the inspiration that John Galliano reflected in his remembered Autumn 2005 Collection for Christian Dior. And six years ago, the eccentric designer Vivienne Westwood presented a collection inspired by the Asháninka tribe of Peru at the Paris Fashion Week.

Not far behind, the renowned fashion house Max Mara presented one year later its Fall-Winter Collection made in Peruvian alpaca. In 2017, Naeem Khan, a designer from India based in New York, visited Peru and was inspired by Cusco and its embroideries, presenting a colorful collection on the New York Fashion Week runways. “I’m in love with your country. For me to be in Cusco, in the church, among so much history from the ancient Incas (…) it has really open my mind about how this country developed... I´m so inspired, I think there will be much of Peru in my collection”, he declared that time, excited.

These are just a few demonstrations of how Peruvian textiles continue to link the imagination of the creators. The possibilities are infinite.
