He is a sculptor, painter, critic and the most outstanding representative of abstract art in Peru. He has developed a personal style known as "abstract indigenismo". He has been aclaimed Doctor Honoris Causa by the San Martin de Porres University, the Pontifical Catholic University, and the UNI (National Engineering University). He has also been recognized by the French Republic with the grade of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. In Chile, he was recognized by the government with the grade of Grand Officer of the Order of Bernardo O Higgins, and in Peru with the grade of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun. His works are displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Spain; the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington D.C.; The Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Museum of Art of Lima, and many others. Some of his most famous art pieces are: Inkarri, Orrantia, and the Black Sun, among others.
