Gabriel Villarán Magnet is one of the most outstanding Peruvian surfers. He has been twice Latin American champion in the U18 Category in 1999 and 2000. He was also national champion in the Open Category and Sub 18 in 2002. He came fifth in the 2004 ISA World Surfing Games Championship in Ecuador. In 2002, he won the national championship. In 2003, he starts surfing professionally and competing in the World Qualifiying Series. The following year, he competed in the WQS, the ALAS Tour and the Junior World Tour. His most important victories were twice the ALAS Tour (2005 and 2006) and the ISA Billabong world championship in 2010 where he ranked second. Later he was awarded with the laurel wreath, the country s highest national decoration in sports. He also carried the torch at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
