We won’t be the biggest or the cheapest but we can be the best

Peru doesn’t have the critical mass to be the biggest or the cheapest apparel supplier in the world, but we have the heritage, the talent and the will to become the best. We believe that, after the Covid-19 pandemic, apparel consumers will become more responsible and demand more sustainable practices from the brands / products that they purchase. Therefore, we aim to become the most sustainable textile providers in the world.

Today, the apparel industry is raising a lot of concerns around the World.  For example: Textiles consume 10% of the World’s industrial water (i.e. 93 billion m3/year) and causes 20% of industrial water pollution (e.g. 0.5 million tons of plastic microfibers go to the ocean every year). Also, the apparel industry is responsible for 10% of CO2 emissions, which represents 1.2 billion tons per year.

Interestingly, 80% of a garment’s waste is determined at the Design stage, and USD 500 Billion are lost each year due to clothing underutilization. For example: in China, most consumers are using each garment 7 to 10 times before discarding them – which is 36% lower than 15 years ago.  Thus, Fast Fashion is resulting in people buying more garments than before but using them less number of times…

We are 7 Billion people in the World today.  For perspective, it would take us 200 years to count all of us (one per second), but we all fit in Los Angeles.  We will be 9 billion by 2045, because, every second, 5 are born while only 2 die. Thus, we don’t have a “space issue” in the Planet; instead, we have a huge “responsible production and consumption” challenge… specially in the textile industry!

In this sense, we have decided to focus our future efforts in maintaining our high quality, while becoming the most sustainable in the world.  We want the PERU TEXTILES seal to stand for High Quality with Sustainability; specifically:

  • Quality: we have some of the best fibers in the world (e.g. pima, organic & native cotton, baby alpaca), we are vertically integrated, and have more than 5,000 years of textile heritage.  If we became world standard in Food – where we have been cooking for over 300 years – just imagine what we can accomplish in textiles… where we have been knitting for over 5,000 years.

  • Sustainability: our commitment with our consumers is to be responsible with our water, our environment and our people. In this sense, we will promote sustainable practices among Peruvian manufacturers in alliance with our Government and the Academy.

Thus, the Private Sector and the Government are working together for the sustainable development of the industry and aim to position PERU TEXTILES as the new standard of excellence by offering high Quality with Sustainability.
