Peruvian coffee and cacao spark great interest among businesses!

The Expo Amazónica 2017 business round table yielded promising results, with commitments to do more than 16 million US dollars of business in the upcoming 12 months. This figure exceeded projections by 65%, according to the Peruvian Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PROMPERÚ).

The event was conceived as an international showcase for products from the Peruvian Amazon, and was attended by 21 importers from Germany, South Korea, Italy, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Japan, United States, France and Portugal, as well as 17 Peruvian buyers.

At this year’s event, around 700 meetings were held with 120 exporters from Amazonas, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huánuco, Junín, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Piura, San Martín and Ucayali, spotlighting various Peruvian products on a global stage. Among the most sought-after commodities were coffee and cacao, which drew attention from Dutch and US buyers in particular.

The Expo also served as a forum for promoting Peruvian biotrade products, such as sacha inchi, blueberries, the Peruvian golden berry, camu camu, bananas, lúcuma, maca, quinoa, chia, amaranth, mango, coconut oil and honey, under the sector-specific brand Super Foods Peru.

About Expo Amazónica

This event is considered a springboard for regional development designed to capitalize on advantages and investment opportunities, as well as the sustainable growth offered by the Amazon region, to bring about its inclusion as an asset for economic competitiveness.

This year, the Expo was held from August 10-13 in the department of San Martín in the cities of Tarapoto and Moyobamba. It featured 400 exhibitors, including grower and craftworker associations, as well as technology and service vendors.

The Minister of Production Pedro Olaechea reported that the 83 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) participating in the event, with support from the Ministry of Production, closed deals worth 5.6 million soles in meetings at the Expo.

The Minister also stated that 1.5 million soles of business was done through Promomype, an initiative designed to foster cooperation between 15 government agencies, the private sector and SMEs to identify new business opportunities, define external formalization policies and strengthen the market.

Looking ahead, the city of Ucayali is slated to be the host of Expo Amazónica 2018, as announced by Manuel Gambini, governor of that region.
