The Peruvian feature length film “Wiñaypacha”, from the director Óscar Catacora, received the “Best First Film” and “Mayahuel for Best Photography” awards in the category “Ibero-American Fiction Feature Length Film” at the latest edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG). Additionally, as part of the festival, it obtained the FEISAL award (American Federation of Image and Sound Schools) for “Best Direction”, awarded to directors under the age of 35, which makes up 3 awards total to Wiñaypacha at the FICG, reported PROMPERU.

Wiñaypacha tells the story of an old couple living in the Peruvian Andes saddled with the sorrow of being forgotten by their son. Wiñaypacha was entirely shot in Aymara, a language native of Peru. The shooting lasted five weeks and it took place in the town of Allincapac, located in the province of Carabaya, Puno region (Southeast Peru) at over 5000 meters above sea level.

The director Óscar Catacora commented that the film is based on the time of his childhood when he lived with his grandparents high up in Puno, and how he saw the longing of his grandparents for the absence of their children.  That is why, to give the realism of his experience to the film, Catacora had as actors an elderly couple from this area of Peru, which represented a challenge for the director. "We knew that the actor directing work was going to be difficult because the Aymara can not lie and, for them, acting is like lying. For that reason, the term 'to play' was proposed to the actors in order to carry out the scenes", said Óscar Catacora.

During the ceremony, the director was very excited about the awards, "I am very happy with the results obtained during the festival. In addition, I am very grateful for the support I have received; without that support and confidence, Wiñaypacha would not have been possible. This is a dream that comes true, and that is cinema, the possibility of sharing a dream, of making it real” expressed the director.

The Peruvian feature film was produced with state funding, through the Project Competitions and Cinematographic Works of the Ministry of Culture of Peru.
