In 2021, it became the first wonder of the modern world to receive this kind of global certification.
From Cusco to the world! To celebrate its anniversary as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the inka city of Machupicchu has once again been certified as a "Carbon Neutral Destination."
Green Initiative, a leader in climate certifications for the tourism sector, was responsible for granting this significant recognition. To earn this award, the Inka citadel implemented effective measures to minimize its carbon footprint and offset the remaining emissions through sustainable practices, including solid waste management and the adoption of a circular economy.
As part of this initiative, notable decarbonization actions included installing a PET plastic and cardboard compactor plant, a biodiesel plant to process waste oil from restaurants and casinos, and a pyrolyzer plant for organic waste, among other measures.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Machupicchu earned this distinction through the combined efforts of both the public and private sectors. On one side, the Municipality of Machupicchu, AJE Group, Inkaterra, and Tetra Pak joined forces. On the other side, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PROMPERU), World Xchange, Luz del Sur, Bosques Amazonicos (BAM), Latam, and CANATUR collaborated. Together, these groups worked towards achieving this common goal.
The certification was awarded based on 2019 carbon emissions data, highlighting efforts to reduce, treat, and properly manage generated waste. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness among residents, businesses, and hotels.
