National pride. The excellent voice of Susana Baca has once again conquered the world. Our Peruvian flag triumphed once again in the Latin Grammys 2020.
The Peruvian singer obtained this recognition in the Best Folk Album category for her album A Capella, produced at her own home during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Susana could not contain her happiness and so she decided to share it with her followers through her social media. Here she dedicates this great achievement to young Peruvians and the working class.
"This is my third Grammy and I am very happy, of course. I think that my work has once again been recognized and I dedicate it to all the young people, especially the young people, and to all the working class that build this country called Peru every day", she said.
It is worth noting that Baca was competing in her category with groups from Mexico and Colombia: Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Los Gaiteros de Pueblo Santo, Tierra Adentro and the Leopoldo Federico Quintet.
Let's not forget that Susana won two Grammy awards in 2011 in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories, respectively, for the album Latin America.
Resilient Artist
The former Minister of Culture of Peru worked on her winning album during the period of compulsory social isolation.
In an interview for the EFE agency, Susana Baca said that she felt a little deflated after the measure and the permanent suspension of concerts and meetings, because for her, as for her colleagues, there is no greater balsam in life than her audience.
"I was dying with the anguish of not making music, of not being able to rehearse with the musicians, not being able to work", the singer said.
However, it was her husband - Ricardo Pereira - who encouraged her to use the resources at hand to immortalize those songs that she hummed melancholically in the different parts of her home in Cañete, and where she has taken refuge from the pandemic.
Without realizing it, her lifelong companion had given her a valuable idea to take advantage of a device that she always carries with her: her cell phone. And although she showed little interest in the technology at the beginning, today she confesses that it has been her lifeline so as not to lose contact with what she loves so much: making music.
All she had to do was turn on her smartphone recorder and sing. The rest was inspiration. Susana's talent is so prodigious that only she can create such unique melodies. According to the artist, while she was composing the songs, she was inspired and gained strength by closing her eyes and thinking about the people who have always accompanied her in the world of music.
"I closed my eyes at times and imagined my friends, the people who accompany me, who always support me and love me, so it was for them and, above all, for the musicians I work with", she said.
The album A Capella contains the following songs: Cardo y ceniza, Duerme negrita, Idilio muerto, Gracias a la vida, Yo vengo a ofrecer mi corazón and Contigo Perú.
National Pride
Peru was present in force in this edition of the Latin Grammy Awards. Like Baca, Peruvian Lorenzo Ferrero, who belongs to the Afro Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, took the award in the Best Arrangement category, for his version of La flor de la canela.
As you can see, Peruvian talent continues to spread beyond its borders. It is clear that music is a universal language.
