For the first time ever, Peru will participate in the RC Show March 1-3, 2020 in Toronto, informed the Agency for the Promotion of Peruvian Exports and Tourism (PROMPERU). The attendance comes on the heels of the country’s recognition as the “best culinary destination in the world” on the World Travel Awards 2019, which is their eight straight win in a row.
As the Featured Country, Peru will also host the opening night reception on Sunday March 1. The evening will include Peruvian entertainment as well as native cocktails and appetizers.“We are excited to introduce our products to restaurants and importers from across Canada at this year’s RC Show. Developing our trade in this area with Canada is a priority for us,” said Aldo Parodi, trade commissioner of Peru in Canada.
Prestigious Canadian-based chefs Jorge Bahamonde and Guillermo Russo will be at the Peruvian pavilion, along with renowned sommelier Gregory Smith, who will share his expertise on Pisco – a native brandy that dates back to the late 16th century. In addition, all demonstrations will feature Peruvian superfoods.Gastronomy in Peru is directly associated with tourism: it respects tradition, seeks sustainability, history, tradition, authenticity and experience. Peruvian cuisine is as vast as its history and the land where it evolved and features diverse flavours from each of its regions.
“We want to showcase to Canada, and the world, our country’s rich culinary offers. Peru is home to some of the world’s most spectacular cuisine and some of the freshest, nutrient-rich superfoods. We are ready to export these goods to Canada and the world”, declared Luis Torres Paz, executive president of PROMPERU.
Indeed, in 2018, Canada imported $135.71 million in fruits and nuts, $55.22 million in coffee, tea, mate and spices, and $54.5 million in meat, fats and oils from Peru. As the country continues to cultivate its gastronomical cuisine and superfood production, is also looking to increase its exports and further develop the already booming culinary tourism industry.
In recent years, the Peruvian government, through PROMPERU, has worked together with the private sector to turn gastronomy into an important factor for the sustainable and inclusive development of the country. There has also been a focus on the export of its superfoods.
Peru is renowned for its wide array of nutritionally dense superfoods, including quinoa, maca, purple corn, goldenberry, cocoa, grapes, mango, oily fish, among others. The country is also the world’s seventh largest coffee exporter and the second largest organic coffee exporter.
