The Norte Chico of Lima has a variety of tourist destinations that can be visited over a single weekend. Huacho is one of those destinations that not only stands out for its fine cuisine and cultural heritage, but also boasts stunning beaches that sea and sand lovers cannot miss.
Also known as "the friendly city", it is located just three hours away from the capital. Its beaches come with the perfect waves for water sport lovers and are also considered suitable for swimming. Here are the must-see stops.
El Colorado. This destination is located 15 minutes –with traffic– from the city of Huacho. Due to this proximity, it has become one of the most popular spots for vacationers. Throughout the surrounding area, visitors can try different seafood and regional gastronomic delicacies.
The famous Cerro Colorado, where many archaeological remains have been found, is also nearby. To get to the beach you can take a taxi or opt for the bus service that is located in Huacho's Plaza de Armas.
Hornillos. Located just a few minutes' drive from El Colorado. Its calm waters have become a favorite spot for those who love fishing. However, the swell can vary according to the season, so it is best to enter the sea with great caution. In summer, it is a very popular place for beachgoers, so it is advisable to get there early to find a good spot.
El Paraíso. This beach is considered one Huacho's little-known treasures. It is located around 14 miles from the city (on average, a little over a 40-minute drive if starting from the Óvalo de Huacho) and the best way to get there is by truck, as the access road is quite a rocky.
The beach resort is ideal for those who have small children or who enjoy swimming, as it is known for its gentle waves. Although bear in mind that, despite the high air temperatures, the sea is not warm. Therefore, if the visitor is not used to swimming in cold water, it is advisable to wear a wetsuit.
There is a large expanse of wetlands surrounding the beach which is home to a group of flamingos, making for a unique sight that is not to be missed. Very close to El Paraíso you can also find the Albuferas de Medio Mundo, an ideal place for bird watching enthusiasts.
Cocoy. A few miles from El Paraíso, there is another beach resort that is ideal for a family outing. The great thing about Cocoy is that the beach is not yet visited by many tourists, which guarantees a more intimate and peaceful encounter with the sun, sand and sea.
Its waters are quiet and crystal clear, making it the perfect place for jet skiing activities. Visitors to this beach resort should bring light clothing and plenty of fluids.
Tartacay. It is located 84 miles from the Panamericana Norte highway and can be reached by truck or by trekking from Cocoy. It is considered to be a virgin beach which also has moderately calm waters. There is a rock formation nearby which is known as the Boquerón del Diablo and can be visited from a safe distance.
It can get a bit windy on the beach, so it is advisable to take some warm clothing, especially for the evening. The tranquility of this destination makes it a perfect setting for camping.
