The San Martín region, located in the north of Peru, has more reasons to celebrate this Christmas season. Last Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) awarded the Safe Travels Stamp to two major tourist attractions in the area: The destinations of Alto Mayo and Tarapoto.

This badge, endorsed by the World Travel and Tourism Council, was received by the regional governor of San Martín, Pedro Bogarín, in a ceremony presided over by the head of Mincetur, Claudia Cornejo, and attended by local representatives of the tourism industry.

As you will recall, the World Travel and Tourism Council awarded the Safe Travels Stamp to the Peruvian government on October 13, being managed by Mincetur.

The minister for this industry stressed that the awarding of the stamp to these destinations, a result of the work done by regional and local authorities and private industry will allow them to position themselves as key destinations in reactivating travel to the interior of the country.

"Alto Mayo and Tarapoto are two of the most visited tourist destinations in San Martín, the third region, after Cusco and Ayacucho, to obtain this stamp. The wonderful natural landscapes of these places make them ideal areas for tourism related to nature, adventure and bird watching. This stamp will therefore allow tourists to have the confidence to enjoy all the benefits and activities of these tourist destinations", said the minister.

Guaranteed protocols

To achieve this recognition, the regional authorities formally requested their application to Mincetur, through the Tarapoto and Alto Mayo Management Authorities, composed of local authorities and the private sector, who collected information and confirmed compliance with the protocols, as well as implementing corrective measures.

They specifically monitored cleaning, disinfection and waste management levels, as well as tourist services, among other things, in accordance with the protocols issued by the government.

Minister Cornejo added that, as part of the commitment to achieve the Safe Travels Stamp, the San Martín authorities and population must ensure that these measures are implemented by all establishments and tour operators.

"The Government will constantly monitor health and safety-related activities in the region", she said.

Prime destinations

Achieving the Safe Travels Stamp means that there are 18 places in total that have been declared safe for travelers in the San Martín region. To note:

Alto Mayo: Plaza de Armas de Moyobamba, Mirador Punta de Tahuishco, Vivero Orquídeas Amazónicas (Orchid Nursery), Aguas Calientes Waterfall, Tingana Nature Reserve, Morro de Calzada, Santa Elena Nature Reserve and Naciente del Río Tioyacu.

Tarapoto: Plaza de Armas de Tarapoto, Lamas Castle, Plaza de Armas de Lamas, Chanka and Lamista Diversity Museum, "El Wayku" Kewhua Community Village Center, Ahuashiyacu Waterfall, Carpishuyacu Waterfall, Mono y la Gata, Aconabikh and Lake Sauce.
